The Lit & Phil in Newcastle isn’t just a brilliant library, you know. It also hosts a variety of talks and gigs from a host of artists. Recently, they’ve been putting on a series of Lunchtime Jazz concerts, which has seen some excellent talent play within their walls. On Friday 5th December, though, there’s a bit of a special duo taking to the stage: Matt Anderson and Paul Edis.

Anderson graduated from Leeds College of Music in 2010, receiving the Sam Hood Rosebowl for Outstanding Performance in the process. After that, he studied jazz with Iain Ballamy and Stan Sulzmann and has been awarded the title of Young Musician of the Year at 2010’s Jazz Yorkshire Awards. Both he and his quartet have gained recognition for their impressive melodies and original compositions.

For this gig, Anderson is joined by pianist Paul Edis, who recently released his latest LP. Together, they’ll be performing a mix of original compositions and jazz standards. It’s an opportunity to indulge in a genre that’s sometimes overlooked but that produces some of the most skilled musicians in the business.
