Reliably informed

When it was announced that The Bronx – a fairly generic West Coast hardcore band – had started a mariachi side project, eyebrows were as high as the band usually look. But when the first Mariachi El Bronx album dropped in 2009, it was a revelation: an album of gorgeous, horn-and-accordion soaked contemporary mariachi tunes, with melodies to die for and some unexpectedly lovely vocals from Matt Caughthran. There have been two more albums since (plus the odd cover, like Prince’s I Would Die 4 U) which have pretty much kept up the standard (although the most recent album sees them stretching the concept somewhat). They’re a blast live, and with any luck they’ll still be rocking their illuminated mariachi suits when they hit The Cluny in Newcastle on Sunday 8th February. “Arriba”, as they say in the Ouseburn.
