Does your child need their cool points racked up a few notches? Are they resisting your efforts to encourage a liking of obscure psych jazz or protest pop? The good folk at Chalk are here to help, with the return of their MAPS festival across venues in Newcastle and Gateshead from Saturday 15th-Monday 24th February, which will see a huge array of immersive art, music and play experiences perfect for hipsters-in-the-making.

On a more serious note, MAPS provides an excellent opportunity to introduce youngsters to high quality cultural experiences without fear of censorship or limitations, and offers parents and carers an opportunity to enjoy some seriously good line-ups without worrying about babysitters.

Chief among the highlights will be a performance from effervescent popsters Stealing Sheep, who pair up with Newcastle-based visual artist Josie Brookes who will create a responsive stop motion animation in real time (Monday 17th, Gosforth Civic Theatre); Hen Ogledd reprise their critically acclaimed Mogic album for one last outing which also features a music making workshop for youngsters looking ignite their oddball creative spark (Saturday 15th, Star & Shadow Cinema); there’s glitter-fuelled queer cabaret from the fabulous Bonnie & The Bonnettes (Sunday 16th, Gosforth Civic Theatre); rapper, singer and songwriter Kema Kay presents a unique storytelling event entitled Grime Time in the Victoria Tunnel (Thursday 20th); plus there’s intergalactic psych rock from Mancunian oddball Paddy Steer (The Cumberland Arms, Saturday 22nd).

Also of interest will be Star & Shadow Cinema’s hilarious childish Fart Orchestra (Saturday 15th), The Cumberland Arms’ Lizzo Appreciation Society (Thursday 20th), BALTIC’s polyphonic playground Space Octave (Saturday 22nd-Monday 24th) and much more.
