Over the past few years, Ryan Gosling has steadily built a reputation for being one of the most dynamic and diverse actors on the planet. His work with Nicholas Winding Refn on Drive and Only God Forgives in particular turned him into a star, but he’s also worked on rom-coms (Crazy, Stupid Love), gangster films (Gangster Squad), and indie comedies (as in the hilarious and touching Lars and the Real Girl). Now, though, he’s stepped behind the camera to present his first feature film as a director in the shape of the beautifully artistic Lost River.

Featuring a host of stars, including Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes, Matt Smith and Saoirse Ronan, Lost River tells the story of a mother trying to protect her children in a dreamlike city. Inspired by the likes of David Lynch and Guillermo Del Toro, the film is a slice of magic realism that tows the line between gritty realism and gorgeous cinematics. It’s not exactly easy watching though: with a flair for the experimental, Gosling’s world and narrative is dark, twisted and intriguing, but perhaps not suited to those expecting something in the vein of his more mainstream output. This one off screening includes a special live Q&A with Gosling broadcast through live satellite. The discussion will no doubt focus on the making of the film and his jump from acting to directing. It’s sure to be an eye-opening talk that will enhance one of the year’s most anticipated films.
