Little Steven may be very familiar to fans of cult US TV shows The Sopranos and Lillyhammer; he is, of course, Steven Van Zandt who is also well known for being Bruce Springsteen’s right hand man in The E Street Band and hailed as a creator of the Jersey Shore sound as a member of the Asbury Jukes.

His band, The Disciples of Soul, has been Stevie’s ongoing solo project since 1981 when the E Street Band were not required in the making of Springsteen’s Nebraska album. A 15-strong “ever-changing group of misfits, rogues, and roustabouts”, the group includes a five-piece brass section, three backing vocalists known as The Divas of Soul and often ex-Bon Jovi legend Richie Sambora on guitar.

The group perform a repertoire covering the multitude of solo albums Van Zandt has released, including tracks from his latest album Soulfire (his first in 15 years) featuring mostly cover versions as well as new recordings of songs Van Zandt wrote for bands like Southside Johnny and The Cocktail Slippers’ St Valentine’s Day, a song that he describes as “me covering me”.

Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul invade the UK this month and play Newcastle’s O2 Academy on Thursday 16th November.
