Southern California normally brings up images of sun-bleached indulgence, of fame and fortune and surgically enhanced beauty. For the trio that make up L.A. Witch – Sade Sanchez, Irita Pai and  Ellie English – however, the old Hollywood images are ripe to be turned on their heads to provide fuel for their eerie, gothic rock and roll.

On last year’s debut album, L.A. Witch cast their attention to the wrong side of the tracks, where the dreams never come true and what’s left is lurid hedonism and loneliness. Songs like You Love Nothing and Kill My Baby Tonight blend lo-fi garage rock immediacy with fifties pop melodies and tense, grinding rockabilly to conjure up a hazy, dangerous atmosphere.

Needless to say then, their appearance at The Cluny on Thursday 29th March (courtesy of promoters Wandering Oak) is bound to be a treat for those with a taste for more noir-ish delights. Appearing alongside L.A. Witch on the night are London trio Abjects, whose grungy and heavy Cramps-isms have been attracting some rave notices, and local punks Luxury, whose steely performances grow more impressive all the time.
