The critically acclaimed show comes to Tyneside
Queen Elizabeth recently became the longest serving monarch Britain has ever had, taking the title away from her grandmother Queen Victoria. As every year passes, the potential for Prince Charles to long reign over us diminishes but the question of what Charles would actually be like as a king still lingers, with some people even thinking that a generation should be skipped and Prince William should become the next king of the British Isles. Directed by the Almeida Theatre’s Rupert Goold, King Charles III is a speculative history play that asks these questions in a bracingly provocative way, following Charles as he makes the leap to being king.
Rather than take a pop at Charles though (because that would be way too easy), the production decides to take a look at the people behind the crowns, examining their relationships and personalities and how this might affect the monarchy from the inside out. What results is an often hilariously funny and audacious production that will really get you thinking about the upper echelons of society. It’s set to be Almeida’s crowning achievement.
