Reliably informed

If you read our special, extended, all round amazing interview with the legend that is George Clinton last week then you’ll know that you don’t fuck with the funk. And boy, things are gonna get funky for our latest musical¬†takeover of the Boiler Shop Steamer this Saturday. We visited the glory days of the 1920s with the House of the Black Gardenia last month and now we’re time travelling fifty years into the future to the fabulous 1970s (and possibly beyond) with some of the most soulful bands our region has to offer.

Headlining our funktacular bill are the regal, majestic¬†King Bee. They released their long-awaited debut album last May and will be using their Geordie Soul to get the crowds dancing like it’s 1979. Again. They’re joined by funk-soul-disco combo The Juggernaut Love Band, who have the world’s most deliciously retro name and some killer floorfillers to g with it. You can also download all their material for free on their Soundcloud page, so if you want to keep the party spirit alive, you know where to go… But we couldn’t keep that level of funk going without causing a disco inferno, so in the afternoon we’re bringing the rockabilly delights of the Sour Mash Trio to the stage to help warm up the crowd on this decidedly chilly start to Spring. You can’t accuse us of not being eclectic…

Of course, the Boiler Shop Steamer wouldn’t be complete without all the usual delicious cuisine and because it’s also Easter weekend there’s a few treats in store. The wonderfully-titled Patty Smith’s will be bringing their mouth-watering selection of burgers all the way from Leeds, while Street Fodder will be gracing us with some long-anticipated delights from the Far East. Newcomer Fair Game Food will be providing a taste of the wild, Malabar Fusion are opening up a Dosa Hut and, if you’re a traditionalist, Fish& are also coming from Leeds to serve up some fruits of the sea.

There’ll also be a whole host of outlets to wet your whistle and a wonderful mix of music from the resident DJs.

King Bee, The Juggernaut Love Band and Sour Mash Trio will all play at the Boiler Shop Steamer, Newcastle on Saturday 4th April.
