Orange Is The New Black is one of the most popular shows around at the minute. Its blend of dark humour and dramatic turns has kept audiences captivated by the show, based on the true story by Piper Kerman. But really, as much as we love it, a show starring minor Hollywood actress Taylor Schilling probably isn’t totally accurate to the experience of being locked away (it’s TV, after all). But theatre has always been knowing for being able to portray even the harshest tales in a powerful and affecting way and Open Clasp are making sure that their latest, critically-acclaimed production is a slice of raw power.

Key Change is a raw and illuminating look at what it’s really like for women in prison. The production was devised by Open Clasp alongside women from Low Newton prison and youth offending institute. In an intriguing move, Key Change originally toured around all-male prisons and last year was named the north east’s ‘Best Devised Piece’ by the British Theatre Guide. We won’t spoil the details of what happens, but rest assured that this thoroughly engaging and heart-rending production will leave you with a greater appreciation of what women go through in the British prison system.

Key Change comes to the Live Theatre, Newcastle on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th September.
