It’s remarkable really that despite being in the biz for nearly 35 years, Jon Spencer has never released a solo album – until now. With the Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash and the recently revived Boss Hog presumably still going concerns, he’s now releasing the typically self-effacing Spencer Sings The Hits this month (through In The Red, inevitably) and touring to support it.

The album sounds pretty much like you’d expect – filthy rhythm and blues, sloppy garage rock, songs about capes – and Spencer still clearly believes in the redemptive powers of rock ’n’ roll. Spencer is widely regarded as one of the most drop dead cool frontmen in rock (I once saw him prostrate on the stage, playing a theremin with another theremin whilst howling “BLUES EXPLOSION” into his mic) and any of his incarnations are worth catching live. So it’s always a pleasure when he hits town, and as well as a run of dates supporting The Melvins (now that’s a double-whammy I wish had reached Tyneside), he’s also embarking on a short solo tour of the UK that hits The Cluny 2 on Saturday 3rd November, backed by a band that includes former Pussy Galore bandmate Bob Bert (also a veteran of Sonic Youth, Chrome Cranks and Action Swingers), as well as Sam Coomes and M.Sord. Support comes from the increasingly impressive The Noise & The Naïve.
