Now firmly established as one of Newcastle’s major players in the Spoken Word calendar I’m comfortable saying that actually Jibba Jabba is so much more than a spoken word night. Yes, there’s poetry-a-plenty, but you’ll also get music, comedy, monologues, short stories… (and yes, the odd guest whose grasp on reality is not as strong as they believe).

What Jenni Pascoe has built and nurtured is a night that brings some absolutely excellent spoken word artists from around the globe as well as balancing the variety of guests invited that gives the evening its multi-layered feel.

I don’t dismiss the quick fire, and occasionally chaotic open mic segments, allowing anyone to take the stage for a three minute spot. In this part basically if you snooze you lose, so make sure you’re near the front to say your piece. My final mention goes out to their very loyal and receptive audience that Jibba Jabba attracts, making all performers feel appreciated, an essential part of any successful night.

Jibba Jabba is at The Cumberland Arms, Byker on Thursday 17th December.
