If you’ve ever been at a gig and it’s all kicked off around you, you’ll recognise the fight or flight unease that ripples through the crowd.

Back in the olden days (1984) the first Jesus and Mary Chain single made me feel like that. A year later, it properly kicked off with a riot at the North London Polytechnic during a JAMC gig.

Media luvvies were all over them and, there was more moral outrage created than The Pistols cussing at Bill Grundy. Happily, when debut Psychocandy appeared, it was obvious they were no flash in the pan bunch of floss haired Neds but a pop infused racket making slice of post-whatever genius. They even had a single in the top ten.

Returning to celebrate 30 years of Psychocandy will the Reid Brothers (think of The Proclaimers high on glue chasing you down the street swinging a sack of rusty pig iron your way) be able to create that menace, that beauty, that vertiginous swoon they conjured up in the first place? It’s not just a case of turning everything up to 11 and kicking the shit out of your gear. If Upside Down sounds like it did back in ’84, that will be a GOOD THING.

The Jesus and Mary Chain come to the O2 Academy, Newcastle on 18th February.
