James Leonard Hewitson, Hartlepool’s finest purveyor of slacker indie pop, notches up another release this month on his own Endearment Records imprint. The two-track double-A side gets an official welcome into the world at The Studio in Hartlepool on Friday 8th September, where James will be performing with a full band.

Sometimes/Experience Song sees James in an introspective mood; pondering love, life and their associated struggles. Handclap-esque percussion announces the opening of Sometimes, as guitars squall in the background and his fuzzy vocals strike the balance between languorous and heartfelt. His repeated refrain of “Sometimes all I need is somebody” seems to strike a self-deprecating tone rather than inciting self-pity, and as the guitars glisten alongside him the track builds into a noisily brutal ending.

Experience Song’s crisis of confidence – “There’s so much more to do but how do I do it? / I think I need to try more things out” – is backed by repetitive refrains, jaunty wobbly guitar lines and clattering cymbals, managing to be as catchy as hell within its two and a half minute burst.

James continues to prove himself to be one of the region’s real shining lights, with a live presence which is as engaging as his songs. Also promoting gigs under his Endearment Records moniker, he curates shows at various venues throughout the next couple of months featuring the likes of Leeds rockers Dead Naked Hippies (Sunday 24th September at The Tyne Bar in Newcastle) and post-punkers Desperate Journalist (Saturday 7th October at Jumpin’ Jacks in Newcastle).
