Reliably informed

James Leg’s bio reads like a rock ‘n’ roll storyboard. John Wesley Myers to his Southern preacher father, he has been playing piano since the age of six before being lured away from the church by drink, drugs, and rock music, cutting his musical teeth with the Immortal Lee County Killers and, latterly, Nashville’s Black Diamond Heavies.

Leg’s second solo album Below The Belt is out now and was recorded at Johnny Walker’s gaff and mixed by Jim Diamond in Detroit while his debut (Solitary Pleasure) was a boozy, bluesy collection of breakneck rockers and soulful ballads that worked on so many levels from the title down to the sweat drenched emotions of the songs. Prone to more obvious and lazy comparisons but more successfully likened to Tom Waits and Eagles of Death Metal his musical take on alt. America often leaves little to the imagination.

Tattooed, bare-chested, long of hair and sideburns, Leg is the real deal. Think Joe Cocker nicotine stained and marinated in bourbon, add some dirty funky keys to the raw delivery, a pinch of gospel fire and soulful swagger and you would be near the mark, but all this adds up to so much more than the sum of its parts and really has to be heard to be appreciated. Sometimes rowdy but subtly profound, his two North East shows (at The Green Room in Stockton on Saturday 5th and The Cluny, Newcastle on Sunday 6th December) will be a unique opportunity to see a bona-fide American art form performed up close and personal.
