In their ongoing mission to diversify and broaden their programming, the Sage Gateshead have recently found themselves a surprising hub for dance music on Tyneside, having recently hosted a plethora of DJs as part of the 6 Music Festival as well as a recent tour from nineties icons Underworld.

On Tuesday 28th April though, the venue will be hosting one of the most beloved and idiosyncratic names in electronic music, James Holden. As a DJ, he’s produced remixes for everyone from New Order and Four Tet to Madonna and Britney Spears, while as a record label head at Border Community, he’s brought the likes of Nathan Fake and Luke Abbott to international attention.

It’s his own productions that have attracted the most acclaim though; his debut album The Idiots Are Winning was described as “the most astonishing debut in electronic music since Boards of Canada’s Music Has the Right to Children,” while his 2013 album The Inheritors used Holden’s own customised modular synths to conjure a fluid sound equal parts industrial and pastoral. For his current live show, Holden’s ambitious and playful synthesiser work is joined by live percussion and saxophone, to expand upon and reimagine his Inheritors material.

Joining Holden on the night is one of the greatest live acts out there, Warm Digits. Their combination of warm retro synths, rushing post-rock guitars and a blizzard of fast-forward disco drumming has made them beloved across the region and beyond: their intelligent, forward-looking take on the future of yesterday is the ideal match for Holden’s exploratory, remarkable work.

James Holden comes to the Sage Gateshead on Tuesday 28th April.
