If you’ve not heard of James Bay, then you’ve either done everything in your power to avoid mainstream radio and TV over the past twelve months or you’ve recently returned from a voyage in deep space. James Bay is hot stuff right now. He’s won the Critics’ Choice Award at the BRITs, his delicate yet catchy single Hold Back The River was seemingly everywhere you turned when it was released and his album The Chaos and the Calm was recently released, riding high in the album charts. Plus he’s got the most recognisable and potentially iconic hat since Pharrell’s brown boater. Not too shabby. His gig at Newcastle Uni’s Student Union has been sold out for months now, but a little further down the road in Sunderland, the good folks at Pop Recs have managed to persuade Bay to play a wonderfully intimate and special set.

Joining Bay on the night will be north east indie-pop stars Hyde & Beast, whose own penchant for songwriting and retro grooves should see them marry up well against Bay’s more delicate but no less retro attitude towards his craft. With the pair playing on Monday, it’s another triumphant booking for the venue and record store, which could see its premises being rammed with more punters than it’s ever seen before. Our advice? Get your tickets early for this one.

James Bay and Hyde & Beast will play at Pop Recs, Sunderland on Monday 13th April. Tickets go on sale on Saturday 11th April and are priced at £5 or £2.50 unwaged.
