It’s True, It’s True, It’s True is an award-winning piece of verbatim theatre from Breach Theatre. Let’s face it, there are a lot of verbatim shows around. Speaking real words onstage from interviews and transcripts has served to refresh theatre’s take on reality. However, verbatim shows have to be more than journalism or documentary; verbatim theatre still has to be theatre.

“It’s true, it’s true, it’s true” are the words shouted over and over again by baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi as she refused to retract her testimony accusing her tutor Agostino Tassi of rape, while being tortured by thumbscrews. Four centuries later, this all-female cast come together to restate the trial of this young woman artist, re-voicing the translated surviving court documents from a courtroom in Rome in 1612 and dramatising the evocative paintings that made her known to the world.

It was the young Artemisia’s sexual reputation that was really on trial, as she was subjected to a virginity test and the slanderous comments of her neighbours. Denied justice by the courts, Artemisia sought vengeance through her art, painting herself into biblical scenes of murderous women, and became a celebrity in her own time. Theatre makers Billy Barrett and Ellice Stevens, alongside video artist Dorothy Allen-Pickard, work with this stirring material in the production which comes to Live Theatre on Tuesday 22nd-Wednesday 23rd October, making it an unforgettable performance which remains grounded in reality and yet transcends and transforms it into so much more.
