There’s a clutch of unmissable gigs taking place on Friday 18th October – which, thanks to the universal laws governing time and space, means there are some you’re bound to miss. As such, barring the imminent invention of affordable time-turners, it’s with much consternation that I’ll be absent for the visit of Ill, the vivaciously brilliant Mancunian quartet who’re bringing their raucous, disobedient post-punk treats to Newcastle’s Cobalt Studios.

Signed to North East imprint Box Records, this month’s jaunt is the group’s latest in support of last year’s red-hot debut We Are Ill; a campaign that’s already witnessed a pair of storming shows at The Cluny and Head of Steam.
As assertive an introduction as its title would suggest, We Are Ill showcases a considerable sonic arsenal, channelling wicked, colourful hooks and chaotic psychedelic wrangling with uncompromising feminist conviction and no lack of structural ambition. The result is a record named among the best of 2018 by The Quietus, Louder Than War and others, and one whose goods demand to be experienced live in all their zealous, untethered glory.

Beforehand, there’s a distinctly doom-laden undercard headed by Black Shape – a London-via-North East outfit channelling homesickness through hulking, heavier-than-thou hammer riffs – and opened by Hermitage – much talked-about newcomers whose members bear the credentials to back their droning psychedelic squall. Head along and make me jealous!

Ill, Black Shape and Hermitage play Cobalt Studios, Newcastle on Friday 18th October
