A new exhibition exploring the subject of migration comes to Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art from Saturday 11th until Sunday 18th June. Bringing together documents, artefacts and artworks made by Middlesbrough-based asylum seekers and refugees as well as British and international artists, the exhibition tackles an emotive issue with real tenderness and should make for something very special indeed.

If All Relations Were to Reach Equilibrium, Then This Building Would Dissolve explores an alternative perspective to the media’s often negative representation of migrants in recent times, with a showcase of thought-provoking paintings, films, texts, objects and archival materials. Recent headlines around housing conditions for asylum seekers in Middlesbrough have a huge light shone on them. Contributors and artists include the Collection of Investing in People and Culture, Right to Remain, Babi Badalov, Chto Delat, Burlesque of North America, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Isabel Lima, and Zanny Begg & Oliver Ressler, among others.

With parts of the gallery operating with free resources, it’ll all encourage learning and debate. For the many individuals fleeing Northern and Sub-Saharan Africa, parts of the Middle East and other regions this is a huge platform to give a voice and an understanding to a plight; and the humanity behind these people forming a part of a multi-cultured Teesside society.

If All Relationships Were To Reach Equilibrium, Then This Building Would Dissolve is at MIMA, Middlesbrough from Saturday 11th until Sunday 18th June.
