Idle Violets have seen some changes in recent years. Originally from Liverpool, the now Stockton-based band have gone through line-up changes, direction detours and influences galore. They seem pretty happy with their ‘final’ incarnation, and the release of their (Break Out) The Crazies EP this month further cements their position.

The title track is a fusion of heavy growling guitars, a quick-smart vocal and frantic breakdowns; it’s a schizophrenic track, grungy without being retro, with some interesting diversions along the way. Gunslinger’s guttural vocal has a Mother’s Milk-era Red Hot Chilli Peppers vibe, the grimy bass providing just enough strut to hold up the twiddly guitar solos, while Fuzz’s aptly fuzzy guitars jostle with confident solos and a charging rhythm.

It’s an attitude-ridden release, with a swagger and groove that holds the attention, and one that will no doubt be just as intense when played live. Witness it for yourself at TSOne in Middlesbrough on Thursday 29th October alongside local lo-fi punk duo Mouses and the post-punk genius of Casual Threats.
