If you were a contestant on Family Fortunes and were asked to name a North East band dealing in glam-tinged rock, then Hyde & Beast would no doubt be the top answer. The Mackem duo of Dave Hyde and Neil Bassett have their unashamedly retro sound down to a fine art, and the release of their wonderfully infectious combo of Wings and T-Rex on second album Open Your Heart proved to be a breakthrough moment. With the release of new EP Hard Times Good Times, the pair build on their signature sound but are turning the brass up a notch.

The eponymously titled first track kicks things off with some luscious singalong harmonies, and an almost leery does of horns that add an extra punch to their usual foot-stomping guitar riffs. It’s a theme that continues throughout the EP, with even the sensitive Everything You Want – highly reminiscent of latter-day Beatles – still manages to squeeze in a cheeky bit of brass underneath its occasionally country-inflected guitar licks and piano melodies that Macca would be proud of.

The group are bringing their even beefier sound to Newcastle’s Cluny on Friday 14th August, playing tracks from Hard Times Good Times as well as their two full-length albums. They’ll be ably supported by fellow Sunderland retro rockers Lilliput, who recently released their debut single Waiting To Go. Don your flares and get your platform boots out as The Cluny is set to boogie to one of the finest bands in the region.
