There’s no doubt there’s some kinda love affair between John ‘Speedo’ Reis and The Cluny – he’s played here a bunch of times in a bunch of bands and he’s always been every kind of brilliant. On Thursday 5th December he’s here with Hot Snakes, who released a trio of superb albums in the noughties, then called it a day around the same time as Rocket From The Crypt but came crashing back recently and released Jericho Sirens on Sub Pop last year, one of the best punk fucking rock albums of the decade.

The Speedo band family tree is almost as labyrinthine as that of our own Billy Childish, but Hot Snakes include Speedo’s longest serving collaborator Rick Froberg (all the way back to Pitchfork in the late eighties) and members of RFTC, Sultans, Night Marchers and Drive Like Jehu (all of whom play in a bewildering who’s who list of other great bands too, like Bardo Pond, Mule, OFF!  and the Obits) and as their last Cluny show a couple of years back showed, they’re as intense and joyful as any of those bands. More stripped down than RFTC, a Hot Snakes show leaves plenty of time for Speedo to show you what a cool fucker he is (whether you like it or not) while probably insulting your hair. Or your family. Or your family’s hair.

Hot Snakes play The Cluny, Newcastle on Thursday 5th December
