Tyneside’s heavy metal scene comes under the microscope in a new six-part audio documentary, released on Thursday 27th February.

Created by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums’ Digital Producer Sarah Younas, Heavier! Faster! Louder! was produced in partnership with music writer John Tucker (Neat Records) and will be narrated by everyone’s favourite local rock DJ, Alan Robson.

The region is rich in heavy metal heritage, with bands like Tygers of Pan Tang, Venom, Raven and Atomkraft beginning their careers on Tyneside and helping to spawn the rise of the genre nationally. The audio documentary will investigate the origins and legacy of these artists, as well as Tyneside’s place in the heavy metal subculture.

“It’s been fantastic unearthing heavy metal’s Tyneside roots to develop this series.” Sarah enthuses. “Tyneside played such a fundamental role in shaping the sound of heavy metal and I hope that the documentary encourages listeners to explore these amazing bands.”

The documentary will be available to podcast subscribers from Thursday 27th February, when there will also be a special launch at the Discovery Museum from 5pm featuring a Q&A and signing session with Abbadon (Venom), Robb Weir (Tygers of Pan Tang), Ged Wolf (Atomkraft, Tysondog) and Bernadette Mooney (War Machine). Also kicking off on the same night, Brofest bring Witchfynde and Stormzone to Trillians to launch Brofest, their weekend of heavy sounds at Newcastle University Students’ Union, headlined by Heavy Pettin’ and Storm Child.
