Reliably informed

With pieces that seek to utilise popular imagination and political history to address personal, national and cultural identity, Hajra Waheed is an artist with a strong vision; so her first UK museum solo exhibition being brought to BALTIC is an exciting one. With her exhibition starting on Friday 29th January and running right through until Monday 30th May, there’ll be lots of opportunity to see some wonderfully inventive work in her display, The Cyphers.

The exhibition follows on from research by Waheed into what she calls ‘our current aerial occupation,’ and the ever increasing militarisation of the sky, where technology, surviellance and military drones come together for an increasingly worrying hold over everyday life, with often lethal consequences. Created against this backdrop of political power games, Waheed’s drawings, videos, collages, photography and other creative outlets, emerge fresh in the form of archives, fragments of bigger things and field notes. With a talented artist constructing new stories about unstable histories, there are few exhibitions that will capture important parts of the zeitgeist as well as this.

Hajra Waheed’s The Cyphers comes to BALTIC, Gateshead from Friday 29th January and runs until Monday 30th May.
