Reliably informed

When you think of Hackney, a couple of ideas may come to mind. You might think of Hackney’s old reputation as one of the more wild and run-down areas of our capital city. Alternatively, you might think of its current status as a hipster locus, stuffed to the brim with cereal cafes and eye-watering expensive eateries tucked into the buildings left behind by priced-out residents.

Big band brass music may at present be something of a distant third compared to these two, but the Hackney Colliery Band are doing their best to turn that around. Having formed in 2008 with a determination to get feet moving and limbs shaking, the band have received widespread acclaim and become darlings of BBC Radio 6Music for their twenty-first century spin on classic New Orleans sounds.

With their most recent album Sharpener arriving last summer, the band’s eclectic tastes can be traced through a track listing that includes their interpretations of material by artists as disparate as Kwabs, Three Trapped Tigers and Nirvana. Now, the nine-piece are back on the road to take their party-ready playing across the country. With the band making a stopover at The Sage Gateshead on Friday 28th July, it’s easy to see where you need to be starting your weekend that week.
