Reliably informed

An entirely original concept; designed to teach as well as entertain. Hip-Hop, People, Places and Things is an audio-visual journey through scratching and beat-matching with the inimitable Grandmaster Flash at Sage Gateshead on Thursday 6th September. There will also be a cinematic DJ set, with Flash’s dextrous mixing ability projected live on screen. Demonstrating original breaks, record sleeves and historical photographs, the history of hip-hop will be writ large by one of the industry’s finest.

There are few people better placed to guide you through such a key period in musical history. Born in Barbados but raised in the Bronx, Joseph Saddler would go on to leave an indelible mark on the future of DJing. His razor sharp beat-matching, through which he earned his ‘Flash’ nickname, and appreciation for a burgeoning hip-hop scene was far ahead of his time; The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash, his seminal early live mix, hasn’t aged a day. Few were willing or able to mix hip-hop records before Flash came along, and this will be a rare opportunity to experience the past, present and future of hip-hop in such illustrious company.
