This summer, GRAHAM IN UK is reintroducing Martha Graham, iconic American dancer and choreographer, to British audiences and dance professionals – and it’s taking place right here in the North East!

From Monday 23rd to Saturday 28th July, Eliot Smith Dance will be hosting classes, workshops, discussions and performances focusing on Martha Graham’s technique, repertory and legacy at Newcastle College’s Performance Academy. Hugely influenced by Martha Graham himself, Eliot Smith has longed to see the Martha Graham Dance Company return to the UK. “This is a game-changer moment when we will rediscover just how ground-breaking, imaginative and innovative Martha Graham was, and still can be for today’s artists and audiences in the UK”. He explains.

Following the death of Martha Graham in 1991, MGDC has worked hard to share the Graham legacy with individual artists and organisations around the world. Janet Eilber, Artistic Director of MGDC, believes that GRAHAM IN UK fits well with the company’s desire to foster ongoing art and research in the UK inspired by this extraordinary woman’s gift to contemporary dance, saying, “This platform I am sure will reunite and foster the lost connection (with the UK) and support future generations within the local and world-wide community.”

GRAHAM IN UK will conclude with a gala performance on Saturday 28th July which will include a special performance by two MGDC Principals dancing an excerpt from one of Graham’s classics – the first time one of Graham’s works has ever been performed in the North East.
