Teesside’s favourite bluesy agit rockers Goy Boy McIlroy will be releasing their brand new EP this month, and as frontman David Saunders reveals, it deals with some rather complex subjects. “It’s deals with themes of inner conflict and reflection brought about by stagnation, isolation and having way too much time to think. These songs were written during my unemployment and due to being sanctioned I was left penniless and feeling inadequate watching my life slip away as I was left stuck in my flat.”

The four-track EP, Duell, may be borne of exasperation and claustrophobia, but this newly introspective approach has rendered the music even more visceral. Lead single Life B’s echoing vocals and brooding bass lines underpin riotous clashing cymbals and spiralling guitar lines while David wails his frustration. “I feel uncomfortable listening to them, there is so much anger and negativity but songs are cathartic in nature and it was inevitable that this low ebb in my life would come out through song.” He explains.

A band not normally known for their restraint, particularly when performing live, the EP has been carefully considered. With drummer Alan taking a parental sabbatical, the EP’s launch and short run of gigs also marks the band’s departure from the live scene for the rest of the year. “We’ve decided to release this EP now as it has been a year since our last release Social Mobility Blues. We have taken our time on this one as we wanted it to be a labour of love as opposed to just rushing them out sporadically as singles to keep our profile up. It had to be an EP anyway as the songs belong together as they reflect a chapter in my life, they wouldn’t have worked as well by themselves.”

Goy Boy McIlroy launch Duell at The Green Room, Stockton on Saturday 5th September.
