Food and drink festivals abound over the summer, but this one’s extra special (and not just because we’ve lent a hand in the music programming). Taking place from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th August, Gosforth Civic Theatre’s free entry beer festival will cram in 30 taps by local and national brewers – including such legends as Box Social, Almasty, Northern Alchemy, Beavertown, Cloudwater and North Brewing Co. among many others – plus street food from Scream For Pizza, the mighty Meat:Stack and newcomers Cubanos.

Entertainment is of superb quality too, with Friday night’s soundtrack of funk, soul and disco coming courtesy of DJ Tim McVicar (alongside beer tasting!) NARC. has programmed the live music for Saturday night, with the ever-reliable Western swing, country blues and ragtime hokum band Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra on headline duties, alongside psych-kraut rockers Behold A Pale Horse and the winsome electro pop sounds of Twist Helix. Where else can you get all that for free?!

Sunday provides a perfect hangover cure in the form of relaxed gaming on retro consoles (and more beer, of course), with live music from acoustic duo FIKA and The Phil Davids Good Times Band.

Booze, music and fun times are all well and good, but there’s an even better reason for you to get behind the event. Liberdade Community Trust are the charity that owns and runs the venue, and their focus is on giving people with learning disabilities and autism the opportunity to get involved in the arts and their community. “Every penny you spend on the bar will go back in to Liberdade and the running of the venue, helping support people with learning disabilities and create a real artistic asset for Newcastle and the North East.” Says Joseph Harrop, building manager and chief organiser.
