Tired of the same old restrictive parameters in modern pop music? Wish things were just a little bit more diverse and unique? Good Food Tapes and Zines did, so they’re launching their own label in an attempt to bring us some exquisite experimental pop. Not only that, but they’re also planning on publishing their own essays on the topic, with the logic that writing about pop and making it are practices that are inextricably linked. In their own words, “Good Food is an attempt to carve out a cultural space from which to critically and creatively scrutinise, negotiate, subvert, and move beyond the limitations of these positions, to experiment with pop, and to play with critical writing.”

To celebrate the launch of the label, Good Food are hosting their own extravaganza of wonky-pop at Newcastle’s Culture Lab on Friday 6th March. Heading up the bill are glitch experimental pop duo Yeah You. Elvin Brandhi and Mykl Jaxn have recently become adepts at live scoring films (they’ve done scores for films at the recent Blue Moon Festival) but their blend of mysterious vocal effects, sampling and monotribes gives their original material a truly intriguing edge. Joining them in the vocal distortion ranks is Charm Offensive; after recently playing alongside nwavi and That Fucking Tank at the BALTIC, he promises to provide leather strap smacks and wet synths smacks. Rounding off the bill are Newcastle multi-instrumentalist Hapsburg Braganza and Alright Lover. It’s a typically off-kilter pop line-up that encapsulates everything Good Food hopes to achieve.
