Manchester three-piece GoGo Penguin take to the stage at Newcastle’s Riverside on Wednesday 7th November to support the launch of their latest release A Humdrum Star.

Although their line-up is consistent enough with their alt. jazz style, containing piano, double bass and drums, it could be said that they’re not your run-of-the-mill jazz group. Between them they create a beautiful, eclectic mix of soundscapey, acoustic electronica-meets-jazz, with a touch of rock influence thrown in. The new album is the group’s third following their Mercury nominated 2014 album V2.0 and 2016’s Man Made Object, and continues the group’s unique outlook on electronic music.

One of the themes which flows through the new album is that of being in a constant state of flux. Following a gig in Tokyo last year, pianist Chris Illingworth began reading into the Shinto belief in kami spirits: “It relates to the idea of being on tour, in that constant flux – and experiences that might be positive or negative, but are all part of a bigger thing.”

Here’s hoping that the Newcastle gig brings all positives and no negatives for GoGo Penguin. Get along and immerse yourself in their unique, cosmic sounds.
