Reliably informed

If you never got your hands on Glass Animals’ debut album Zaba then you’re missing out on something special. Combining tropical jungle beats with the oddities of Radiohead, the wordcraft of Alt-J and the rampant underlying sexuality of Wild Beasts, Zaba was an electro-folk circus of epic proportions. The Oxonians have quietly built up a strong and dedicated fanbase on the strength of Zaba alone over the past twelve months, culminating recently in a triumphant performance at the BBC 6 Music Festival. Now they’re returning to the North East once again to bring the majesty of their debut back to Tyneside once more.

In a live situation, the restrained, intricate jams of the likes of Hazey and Toes are always on the verge of being set free, producing moments of raw energy that turn their songs into different beasts. Like a musical Jekyll and Hyde, the delicate curiosities of Zaba become roaring jungle snarls of genre-bending perfect pop that oozes unbridled sensuality not heard on record. Glass Animals have become masters of evolving and expanding their sound in a live setting, so much so that an already glorious album becomes something magical. You’d be foolish to miss them.

Glass Animals play at Riverside, Newcastle on Friday 6th March.
