It may be the season to be jolly, but for those of you who are more ‘bah humbug’ than ‘deck the halls’, secretive Swedish metallers Ghost may be the perfect antidote to Christmas cheer. On Wednesday 16th December, spend a cold winter’s eve with Satanic priest (and vocalist) Papa Emeritus III and his band of masked ‘Nameless Ghouls’.

Touring to support their third studio album Meliora, Ghost’s associations in the rock music world are mighty impressive, having recorded an EP with Dave Grohl (who is said to have donned a disguise and secretly performed with the band), and toured alongside the likes of Iron Maiden, Slayer and Alice In Chains. Huge in their native Sweden and gaining a cult following around the world, Ghost have caused controversy with their Satanic lyrical content.

For those of you worried you may see on-stage goat slaughter, fear not; Ghost’s image is largely tongue-in-cheek and powered by theatrics. Though they owe their aesthetic to Scandinavian black metal, their sound is much less abrasive, with one Nameless Ghoul describing their music as “a mix between pop music and death metal”. Less Burzum, more Spinal Tap then, but still packing one hell of a hard rocking punch.

Ghost play the O2 Academy Newcastle on Wednesday 16th December.
