Opening appropriately in the city that forms the dank and noirish background to Jack Carter’s violent misadventures before heading off on a national tour, director Lorne Campbell and writer Torben Betts bypass the classic British crime film, returning instead to the brutal original 1970 novel, Jack’s Return Home, in their reinterpretation of Get Carter which debuts at Northern Stage from Friday 12th February until Saturday 5th March.

This stylish reinvention of the well-known tale stars the outstanding Kevin Wathen, previously seen terrorizing Live Theatre with a remarkable turn as unhinged hotel barman Gary England in Betts’ What Falls Apart. Picking at the background of the repugnant yet respectable antihero while keeping the familiar narrative cloth in place, we’re offered a striking new vision of Carter and how he became the man we love to loathe.

Dark and relentless, this new adaptation offers an uncompromising glimpse into the heart of the titular London mob enforcer, a monolithic man transformed by furious grief into an avenging wraith hell-bent on discovering the truth behind the murder of his brother.

Violence begets more violence as seemingly increasingly well-founded suspicions lead Carter to cut a swathe through the Geordie underworld, carving out a name for himself and arousing the interests of the local crime families as he is driven towards his unavoidable destiny. A stylishly dark soundtrack is provided by North East native Nadine Shah, who records original music as well as interpretations of classic songs by The Animals.

Get Carter is at Northern Stage, Newcastle from Friday 12th February until Saturday 5th March.
