Many bands try, and most fail, to produce an entire album’s worth of material with precisely no duff tracks. It takes a special and rare talent to hold a listener enraptured from start to finish, and it’s a skill that songwriter Gem Andrews has in spades. Poised to release her new album, Vancouver, in January on Martin Stephenson’s Highlands label, Barbaraville Records, Gem will play a special launch show at The Cluny 2 on Sunday 28th December.

The songwriter has recently moved from Newcastle to Berlin and it’s clear that her travels have inspired the new release. “A central theme is definitely ‘leaving home’ whether it be a family home or a home made up of family that you make along the way.” She explains. Her alt. country style has been guided by North East troubadour (and now label boss) Martin Stephenson, and her compositions have been fully realised thanks to the backing of an eight-piece band. Gem’s expressive and melodious voice is at its best on the simple beauty of Calling and, though her voice is often tinged with sadness, as on the lovely Dead Weight and heartbreaking Mother Dear, it’s a testament to the power of her songwriting that Vancouver is a hopeful and highly accomplished piece of work, no doubt all the more intense in a live setting.
