Australian singer Gabriella Cohen has caused quite an underground buzz with her recent album Full Closure & No Details. Recorded in just ten days and documenting and dissecting the details of a failed relationship, it’s undoubtedly well-worn subject matter but the narcotic and narcoleptic style of her performance is like listening to your best friend sharing their deepest and darkest secrets while ensconced in a protective Tramadol cocoon. Beautiful album centrepiece Downtown channels the very best of sixties girl-pop but with a lazy, hazy slacker vibe that is just bound to squeeze its way into the closing credits of an independent movie sometime in the future.

Well versed in garage production techniques as front woman of garage-rock band The Furrs, Cohen takes this lo-fi approach in a different direction as a solo artist, retaining the fuzziness but venturing down a path that recalls The Velvet Underground and other more psychedelic artists from the past.

With a four-star rating for the album already in the bag from The Guardian, it seems The Kids Are Solid Gold have pulled off another blinder in getting another potential global superstar to rock the mean streets of Middlesbrough at the Westgarth Social Club on Friday 19th May.
