Reliably informed

After last month’s slew of fifth anniversary gigs psych promoters Wandering Oak show no sign of slowing down, and thank goodness for that. On Wednesday 13th March they bring together an international line-up of talent to The Cluny 2, with Fumaça Preta coming to Newcastle via Venezuela, Portugal and various UK environs. As you’d expect with such a multi-cultural mix, the group create a hypnotic fusion of swirling Latin American psych, peppered with disorientating tropical rhythms and complemented by a percussive madness which makes it pretty difficult to keep still.

Offering up support are French group Electro Retro Spectrum, who provide an altogether heavier, grungier outlook replete with doomy, ponderous rhythms. Recent single First Line sees Tara Clamart’s considerably powerful vocals seek to empower youth in a paean to rejecting gun violence over a rollicking fuzzed-up backdrop. Smart stuff indeed.

Not to be outdone, the North East is well represented by The Smokin’ Coconuts, who bring their own rallying cries fused with reggae, Latin and calypso rhythms, all wrapped up in an idiosyncratic style that’s filled with as much danceable joy as it is bonkers energy.
