Folk fans have much to celebrate as a brand new platform for the genre will launch this month at Newcastle’s Alphabetti Theatre.

Spanning the weekend of Friday 7th and Saturday 8th February, the theatre opens its doors to up and coming talent as well as established names in the region. Taking the well-respected Glasgow Folkclub as its inspiration, Newcastle’s very own Folklub’s remit will be to champion top-drawer performers in an intimate setting. Folkclub is the brainchild of Dave Gray (melodeon player from Katie Doherty & The Navigators), who hopes the venue will serve as a gateway for new fans to first experience the genre. “As well as attracting some of the folk scene’s biggest touring artists, Folklub will provide a stage and opportunity for many aspiring folk musicians in the North East while also creating a family of folk musicians and support within the larger community of the traditional music scene. We want Folklub to be a brand people recognise and associate with quality, talent and good times.”

Kicking off proceedings for the opening weekend, Dave’s own band Katie Doherty & The Navigators will present their joyful take on the genre on Friday 7th, alongside North Yorkshire folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Jack Rutter; while on Saturday 8th, after an afternoon Sword Dancing workshop with Newcastle Kingsmen and the presentation of the inaugural Folklub Songwriter of the Year competition, the evening performances come from BBC Young Folk Award Winner Maddie Morris, progressive folk sextet Pons Aelius and duo Janice Burns and Jon Doran.
