The Cumberland Arms hosts a night of emerging rootsy talent
Well this looks lovely! Local folk outfit Brierdene have called upon two other bands to put together Folk In Bloom, a little mini folk festival at the inimitable Cumberland Arms on Thursday 20th July, a night of emerging rootsy talent that sounds like it’s not to be missed.
Brierdene themselves come with a stamp of approval from none other than Kathryn Tickell (“full of exciting arrangements and rock-solid musicianship… don’t miss these fantastic young musicians at the start of their careers!”). Playing together in Newcastle for a long time, they bring fiddle, viola, flute, guitar and accordion to the table, as well as heaps of originality and energy. East Corner Trio hail from London and time spent busking at local farmer’s markets with melodeon, banjolin, flute and pipes. Finally, Manchester’s Gleo (it comes from the old English ‘gleodream’ – literally glee-joy, the feeling of pleasure that comes from listening to music or poetry) mix trad and original tunes on cello, trombone, fiddle and concertina and conjure up England, Scandinavia and the Celtic regions. Gleo are all members of the National Youth Folk Ensemble so you know they’re going to be hot!
Three exciting new roots acts in Newcastle’s home of folk, for the cost of a London pint. You’d be crazy not to go.
