It’s been exciting to see the Star & Shadow Cinema return with so many wonderful events over the last couple of months, but they’ve really upped the ante with this one: on Thursday 20th September they’re teaming up with Wild Pop and The NewBridge Project to present a night of Escape-ism, the newest project from the inimitable Ian Svenonius – singer, musician, writer, film-maker, polemicist, TV star, inventor of the ‘Gospel Yeh-Yeh’ sound and ‘sassiest boy in America’.

After such essential bands as Nation Of Ulysses, The Make Up, Weird War and Chain & The Gang, Escape-ism is Svenonius’ ‘Found-Sound-Dream-Drama’ solo project – just him, his guitar and some junkshop electronics along with the usual arch ideology and reportage from the frontline of the culture war. There’s a new album, The Lost Album, out this month to accompany the tour, but of course, this is Svenonius so it’s no regular gig. He’ll be hosting a talk about what Escape-ism means early in the evening, and there’s also support from gender-fluid cabaret artist Melody Sproates, who’ll be presenting a piece called You Are Who You Choose To Be, a response to the tiresome question “are you a boy or a girl”. The rest of the bill – including DJs – is still TBC, but this is already an unmissable event.
