Reliably informed

Slowly but surely, Pop Recs Ltd. have been hollowing out a little niche for themselves on the North East’s music scene. Looking both to local bands and further afield to attract big stars, last year the intimate venue and record shop put on a series of monthly gigs and one-off shows from Gruff Rhys, Gulp and Girlpool as well as hosting single releases from the likes of Lisbon. It was only a matter of time before they kicked off their 2015 season, then, and for their first full-on gig of 2015, they’ve bagged indie-pop trio ELK.

The three-piece, who are releasing their debut album Herd Songs in the next few months, play underground pop that’s been described as occupying a snug little space between Helmet and Belle & Sebastian. They certainly have a catchy jangle-pop aesthetic, but what sets them apart is the vocals. All three members – Thomas, Ritchie and Glenn – all sing and their voices criss-cross and entangle in their music, adding an added dimension to their intelligent, 90s-inspired tunes. If the quality of ELK are anything to go by, then Pop Recs should be in for a bumper year.

ELK play at Pop Recs Ltd., Sunderland on Saturday 24th January.
