Reliably informed

David Ford has come a long way since his three-chord thrashing days with his old band Easyworld, who burned briefly but brightly around the turn of the century. Since growing disillusioned with life as the figurehead of a power-pop trio, he has ensconced himself as a cult solo artist who in the last ten years has released four studio albums and a beautifully written memoir, in the process building a dedicated enough fanbase to support his doggedly DIY ethic.

It’s in the live arena where his creative gifts truly come to life, though, and Friday 5th December sees him return to the scene of a number of previous triumphs, Hall 2 of Sage Gateshead. This time, though, he isn’t coming alone. He will be accompanied by The David Ford Orchestra and the tantalising promise of ‘luscious re-imaginings of his finest songs, old and new’. Whether that means less of the manic one man symphony of looping and layering that has characterised his gigs down the years, or if it will simply be multiplied to some hitherto unimaginable degree is unclear right now, but either way it’s a show which will be a real pre-Christmas treat on the banks of the Tyne.

The David Ford Orchestra is at Sage Gateshead on Friday 5th December.
