Written and recorded solo in the comfort of his own bedroom on his MacBook, and produced by local lad Josh Bell, Daniel Frend’s debut EP T H E S L O W D O W N is released this week. Four tracks of sublime indie and shoegaze bliss, the EP moves from the title track’s languid and highly melancholic vibes, accompanied by Frend’s voice at its most emotional and breathless, to the more immediate and jangly sound of You and Ghosts. If you enjoyed the genre-hopping retro pop of BC Camplight’s comeback earlier in the year, then Frend’s debut is a lovely accompaniment that goes easier on the dark imagery but still big on the highly atmospheric surf-pop goodness.

At his gig at Tynemouth’s Surf Café on Sunday 22nd March, which doubles as a launch gig, Frend will be playing tunes from the debut and also giving away free copies of the EP for anyone who attends. Can’t complain about that.
