For roots and blues fans in the Wearside area it’s been a long, hard summer. The Independent’s popular roots and blues programme took a break for a while and left a hole of live music. Thank the heavens that it’s back with a brand new programme of events┬áthen, kicking off in style by bringing ‘blues boy’ Dan Owen to the venue.

Owen’s backstory is worthy enough to be cast in slow motion with a sad soundtrack on The X Factor. Originally wanting to be a guitar maker, Owen’s dream was shattered by a tragic accident that blinded him in one eye. Determined to make a living from blues music, he turned to live gigging and found himself playing over 150 shows a year. Unlike The X Factor, though, Owen’s voice and talent surpasses the vast, vast majority of anyone rolling up in front of Simon Cowell and co. With a strikingly beautiful voice and amazing guitar playing skills, just watching Owen ply his trade is a joy to behold.

With Tennesse’s Sam Lewis, Rob Heron & The Teapad Orchestra and Martin Harley also all confirmed to play in the next few months, the latest roots and blues programme is shaping up to be one of the best seasons yet.

Dan Owen plays at Independent, Sunderland on Friday 11th September.
