Aiming to challenge perceptions and bring some truly original contemporary drama to South Tyneside, The Customs House are gearing up to present a three month-long season of plays which tackle a variety of knotty subjects. Custom Made will see work from around the country finding a home in South Shields, and audiences are invited to try out fresh and unique works on a Pay What You Decide basis once joining their Friends of the Customs House scheme.

Launching the season on Thursday 17th September, cutting-edge theatre group Vital Xposure present The Disappearance of Dorothy Lawrence, investigating the life of outspoken journalist Dorothy Lawrence, whose ambitions to be a First World War correspondent takes her to the front line; a mixture of integrated stage text and audio-visual elements promise a potent discourse on themes of inequality and power. Camisado Club send a mixtape to outer space in You, Me And Everything Else from Wednesday 30th September to Thursday 1st October; while on Sunday 4th October a double bill of music-loving plays with a live soundtrack by DJ Mariam Rezaei will entertain. The difficulties of coming to terms with Alzheimer’s is brought into sharp focus in One Last Waltz, a funny and touching production on Wednesday 14th October; Confirmation on Friday 6th November attempts to have an honourable dialogue with political extremism. Asylum, abuse and human rights atrocities are at the heart of The Bogus Woman on Monday 9th November, which tells the story of an African woman arriving in the UK; and to cap the season off on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st November, Be Brave And Leave For The Unknown looks at the nature of bravery, from warzones to waiting rooms, roadsides to railway platforms.

Custom Made season runs at Customs House, South Shields from Thursday 17th September until Saturday 21st November.
