Reliably informed

Sometimes we throw around the words “legend” and “pioneer” around a little too freely, but in the case of Courtney Pine, you can’t help but use both terms. In the 80s, Pine was one of the very first black British jazz artists to make their mark on to the scene and over the years he’s won numerous industry awards, broken ground with a string of acclaimed recordings and bagged himself both an OBE and a CBE for his services to music.

Last year, Pine toured around the UK, US and Canada – which included numerous festival appearances – in support of his critically acclaimed fifteenth album House of Legends. Not one to rest on his laurels, though, Pine has been hard at work producing number sixteen, planning to strip everything back to the bare bones for a string of dates with Mercury Prize nominee and MOBO Award winning pianist Zoe Rahman. Song (The Ballad Book) sees the pair have pieced together new interpretations of classic tunes, ad aim to bring out the intimacy of the ballad form. It’s sure to be a memorable night in the company of a jazz legend and a rising star.

Courtney Pine comes to Middlesbrough Town Hall on Monday 4th May.
