Under the pseudonym Competition, Craig Pollard has spent the last few years mining a rich seam of rough, raw pop music, marrying skeletal and lo-fi arrangements to sweet, empathetic song writing. Following on from 2016’s fine Clean Eating tape, the second Competition release, You Turned Into A Painting, arrives via Slip (home to recent albums from CHAINES, Ashley Paul and Yeah You amongst others) on 7th November.

Simultaneously stripping the Competition sound down even further whilst pushing it in new directions, You Turned Into A Paining sees Pollard placing an emphasis on lean, precise songwriting that cuts out much of the murk and languor of Clean Eating in favour of swift pop ekstasis. Strange, sinewy R&B and hip-hop production motifs provide additional colour to Pollard’s sound palette this time out, but the aesthetic remains distinctly homespun and introverted and the compositions resolutely micro in focus.

To celebrate the tape’s release, Competition is playing a headline show at Northern Charter in Newcastle on Friday 9th November, with Mat Riviere, Leah E Miller and Slip DJs also part of the line-up. Mixing up the music with film and multimedia presentations, this is set to be an eclectic and thoughtful evening fitting for Competition’s open-hearted, intelligent work.
