An innovative group of musicians will perform new works inspired by the museum’s artefacts

Experimental musical supergroup Common Objects make a stop at The Oriental Museum at Durham University on Tuesday 12th April. Representing some of the leading musicians from the experimental, sound art and improvised music fields, the musicians in Common Objects will compose and perform six new works unique to each destination.
Common Objects includes the world-leading harpist Rhodri Davies, known for his wind, water, ice, dry ice and fire harp installations; saxophonist John Butcher with a specialism in feedback; Lee Patterson who builds and plays self-made instruments and amplified devices; Angharad Davies who adds objects or materials to her violin to extend its sound making properties; composer Lina Lapelyte who explores the phenomena of song to examine issues of displacement, otherness and beauty; and renowned experimental improviser, composer and DJ Pat Thomas.
The musicians will become resident in the Oriental Museum for this particular performance, identifying objects to form the basis of new ‘object’ musical scores to be performed by the ensemble. In engaging with artifacts, the event will seek to identify and stimulate new relationships and resonances between the composers’ sound work and the objects’ histories.
