NEWS: Club Resistance @ The People’s Bookshop, Durham

What happened to protest music? Except for a few singles and albums scattered here and there, protest music has gone into something of a decline in recent times. It’s highly surprising, considering that the coalition between the Tories and Lib Dems has caused so much controversy over the past five years (the amount of scandal alone is too great to list here). But really, protest music never really went away, it was just bubbling under the surface swamped by the mainstream. That’s exactly why The People’s Bookshop in Durham have set up Club Resistance, a monthly acoustic night dedicated to resisting the right-wing shift in politics and proving that protest music is alive and well. The first night takes place on Sunday 14th December and features Hartlepool-based singer-songwriter Lee Maddison.

Maddison will be providing acoustic versions of songs which reflect on his experiences working in the NHS. Accompanied by Stewart Hardy on the fiddle, Maddison’s music has been described as weaving beautiful musical tapestries, while his experiences working within the healthcare system are sure to provide an interesting and thought-provoking insight (particularly with the recent controversy surrounding the potential privatisation of the NHS).

Each night of acoustic performances will also be accompanied by discussion, comedy and some fiery debate surrounding the state of current politics. While we’re staring another General Election in the face, it’s refreshing to see a night that’s unafraid t combine politics with entertainment once again.

Club Resistance will take place at The People’s Bookshop, Durham on Sunday 14th December.
