Reliably informed

House of Blah Blah is situated in the old post office in Middlesbrough, it is an elaborate Victorian building holding pride of place in the far corner of Exchange Square but inside, stripped to its bricks and pipes, it is a sprawling rabbit warren, organised-as-disorganised mix of contemporary artists and photographers both locally and more widely established.

Across two floors, several rooms and 2000 sq metres, the Christmas Market on Saturday 12th December promises over 50 independent and local traders offering unique gifts and general festive diversion. Sample a range of seasonal food and drink from chocolates to mulled wine or a cup of tea from Lottie’s Voluptuous Delights. There will also be performances throughout the day from local singers and choirs and, this being the House of Blah Blah, expect a left-field twist or two.

It’s for all the family too: find out if the little ones are on the good or the bad list with a visit to Santa, then stick around for the Santa life drawing competition (Disclaimer: I am assuming the big fella will remain clothed). Sticking to the House of Blah Blah ethos there will also be a number of creative workshops including create your own rag wreath or Stockton Sixth Form art students will be on hand to print your own Christmas cards and, rather splendidly for a Saturday in December, there will also be a hair and beauty boutique to fix those locks before hitting the town.

As an early antidote to the increasingly overblown big commerce of Advent I can’t think of anything better.

The Christmas Market at House of Blah Blah, Middlesbrough is on Saturday 12th December from 11.30am until 6.30pm.
